The Process from Start - FinishCommission
The remarkable mosaic sculpture Stacked Stories was created to reflect the heart of Stevenage - its people.
Designed to feel personal & meaningful to the local community, the artwork celebrates the place the residents call home.
To bring this vision to life, Donna & Junction 7 spoke with residents across the town, asking one simple question: “What brought you to Stevenage?”. Their inspiring and heartfelt stories became the foundation of this unique and vibrant piece of art.
Design
With the stories gathered and details carefully considered, the design process began. Donna thoughtfully incorporated unique details into every stone, each one designed to reflect the spirit of Stevenage and the people who make up its community.
Polystyrene
Once the design was finalised, the next stage was bringing the sculpture to life by creating each individual stone. Each stone was carefully crafted using a polystyrene base, a material chosen for its lightweight qualities & flexibility, allowing Donna to carefully carve and shape each element to match her vision.
Cement
Once the bases were carved into their final shape, the skilled factory team applied a layer of cement to each piece, ensuring a smooth and even finish ready for the next step.
Arrival
All of the prep work was done, the day came for the stones to be transported safely to Donnas studio, here in Ware. It was an exciting day when they arrived in the van, and the mosaic work could get started.
Mosaic
With stories gathered and the design carefully planned out, it was time for Donna to bring “Stacked Stories” to life.
Every tessera was individually hand-cut, symbolising a unique path - a story that grows, connects, and continues without end.
Delivered
With everything completed, it was time to carefully transport the stones to its final destination - Stevenage Interchange
Installed
It was finally time. After 18months of hard work, Donna’s sculpture and the stories of Stevenage were about to come to life for the whole community to see. This was a surreal moment and the perfect ending to this creative Journey.
