Still Life and Self Portraits on Toned Paper

Learn how to create striking black and white studies on toned paper, starting with fruit still life to build confidence before embarking on self portraits, with a focus contrast, and careful observation.

We’ll begin in the morning by working from real-life reference using fruit and home decor objects, before moving on to a simple still life composition. You’ll learn how to identify the darkest darks and lightest lights, while allowing the toned paper to do the work of the mid-tones. This approach helps you simplify what you see and understand form more clearly. We’ll also look at thumbnails and composition, helping you explore different arrangements and make stronger visual decisions before starting your final piece.

By the end of the morning session, you’ll be better able to break subjects down into their essential dark and light areas, helping you understand structure, contrast, and form more confidently.

In the afternoon, we’ll apply the same technique to self portraits on toned paper. We’ll look at simplification, proportions in ways that doesn’t feel intimidating.  So your portraits feel fresh, strong, and full of character.

Working on toned paper has many advantages:

  • Sketches can be completed much faster

  • It feels less intimidating than starting on white paper

  • It encourages stronger observation and clearer decision-making

All paper, pens, and pencils will be provided.

Please bring a self-portrait photo on your phone so you can refer to it during the afternoon session, and make sure you bring your charger so your phone does not run out of battery.
