“Stacked Stories” Stevenage Bus Interchange, Mosaic Sculpture 2025

Mosaicist Donna Reeves has created a mosaic sculpture for Stevenage Bus Interchange, inspired by cairns- traditional rock markers guiding travellers. Every tessera has been handcut, symbolising the countless journeys that intersect in Stevenage. The base rock honours the town's history, featuring the coat of arms and Viking boat. The middle rock, banded in eight colours represents the neighbourhoods. The top rock captures personal memories, with keepsakes embedded from the community. Taking 18 months to complete, the project involved local participation and holds deep meaning for Donna, whose grandfather moved his family from London to Stevenage to work at British Aerospace.

I thought I would list some of the symbolism to so that you had further info:

Base rock: is all about the History of Stevenage and includes the

 Coat of arms

Acorn and leaf to represent the Oak tree from the Coat of arms ( this is repeated on all 3 for continuity)

2 foxes: 2 fox twins/ or nature

Barclay School: clay tile of tree

Clay tiles of nature printed from actual leaves from stevenage

Flowers to represent nature. There is a use of colour, pale blue, purple to represent the Suffragette movement in Stevenage.
