“Stacked Stories” Stevenage Bus Interchange, Mosaic Sculpture 2025
Mosaicist Donna Reeves has created a mosaic sculpture for Stevenage Bus Interchange, inspired by cairns- traditional rock markers guiding travellers. Every tessera has been handcut, symbolising the countless journeys that intersect in Stevenage. The base rock honours the town's history, featuring the coat of arms and Viking boat. The middle rock, banded in eight colours represents the neighbourhoods. The top rock captures personal memories, with keepsakes embedded from the community. Taking 18 months to complete, the project involved local participation and holds deep meaning for Donna, whose grandfather moved his family from London to Stevenage to work at British Aerospace.
I thought I would list some of the symbolism to so that you had further info:
Base rock: is all about the History of Stevenage and includes the
Coat of arms
Acorn and leaf to represent the Oak tree from the Coat of arms ( this is repeated on all 3 for continuity)
2 foxes: 2 fox twins/ or nature
Barclay School: clay tile of tree
Clay tiles of nature printed from actual leaves from stevenage
Flowers to represent nature. There is a use of colour, pale blue, purple to represent the Suffragette movement in Stevenage.
Joy Ride in a clay tile
The Clock tower in a clay tile surrounded by a Piet Mondrain tile ( the same as the Primary School completed)
HM Vincent bike in a clay tile
Stevenage map
Bicycles surrounding the map to show the bicycle routes
Viking Long Boat with waves to represent the Lakes and water
Yellow bus from the 50s
Mallard train
The background in grey mosaics represents the roundabouts and cycle paths. Inspiration from a local man who takes aerial photos & from the photos given by the Museum.
Middle rock: Community
The words: " The heart of a town lies in its people" taken from the coat of arms
Braille Lego: which reads "Welcome to Stevenage".
The idea is this work is to be touched but not to be climbed on. It is art not a climbing frame!
Stevenage Football club in a clay tile surrounded by the red and white colours
Hole in the middle to honour Henry Moore who features a hole in his work/ also represents a tunnel for transport and journeys.
8 rainbow colours to show the 8 neighbourhoods/ Pride
Caribbean flower taken from a keepsake given to me in fabric which couldn't go on the sculpture so made in a mosaic
Top rock: Community stories & keepsakes
Back = stories & Indent=holds the keepsakes
Back:
Acorn and leaf & Roundabout background repeated. Nature continued throughout 3 rocks
Nala the cat
Silkingrad
